Disappointing products of 2013

20140121-223327.jpg

Although 2013 was a good year for my beauty regime, there were a few beauty products which did let me down a bit! This isn’t to say that they wouldn’t work on other people, but I thought it would be good to show what products don’t suit me!

Batiste Dry Shampoo – Fresh & Flirty Blush – £4.99

20140121-224250.jpg
* When I got this dry shampoo, I was hoping that it would help with ‘hijab hair’ that us Hijabi’s get after wearing a scarf all day! It’s superb at adding a bit of volume and reviving limp hair but it left an AWFUL white cast on my hair! I looked like an old lady! I know they do a spray specifically for brunette’s, so I may just have to try that!

Topshop Cream Blush – Afternoon Tea – £6

20140121-224352.jpg
* With this product, I was so excited to try if after I had bought it because I loved the colour, however, I should have known better! Cream blushes and me have a notorious relationship because they don’t last on me unless I set them with a powder! This was the only cream blush I got this year but I feel as though although its cream-to-powder formulation, it does nothing and wears off momentarily! Was a waste of money to be honest!

Bobbi Brown Corrector – Bisque – £18.50

20140121-224422.jpg
* This was actually more of an impulse purchase which didn’t work out! I was with someone who said they swear by it and because I had heard so much about it, I was crazy to try it however, it took me ages to figure out what colour I was, how to apply it and now.. To finish it! It’s really cakey and thick and also I feel as though the shade is off! It creases really badly and when I try to set it, it makes my under eyes look dry.. Very strange product for me!

Eyeko Skinny Mini Liquid Eyeliner – Black – £12

20140121-224507.jpg
* This was one of the first ever products I have tried from Eyeko! I was so excited to try it because I loved using my L’Oreal Perfect Slim eyeliner and really got into the felt tip eyeliner method! However, this was really dry the second time I used it even though I stored it nib face down! It’s really black and has a good applicator but the product was just dry and really hard to revive! It was so dry, it was tugging at my eyes! I’m don’t know if I got a bad one or whether they’re all bad however, I’m still open to trying Eyeko products.. No hard feelings!

Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Extreme Plump Pucker – Pink Out Loud – £10

20140121-224526.jpg
* When it comes to lipgloss, last year was a big shiny mess for me! I tried so many glosses ranging from £1 to £20 and by far and beyond, I was disappointed the most by this one! It is Soooooooo strong, it made my lips feel like I had had anaesthetic injections in them! It was really painful and I didn’t feel as though my lips had changed in the slightest in size! When I apply it on top of lipstick, I can’t tell I even have gloss on! It’s a nice colour and has a good finish and pigment, but it’s hard to wear!

Essie Nail Varnish – Russian Roulette – £7.99

20140121-224550.jpg
* This nail varnish colour is AMAZING! I love this red because it’s a true red and not orange nor blue toned! It looks good on any skin tone and is so beautiful to apply! It has a big brush and the colour is super pigmented BUT it stains my nails SOOOOO bad! It took me months to grow out the colour because it just wouldn’t fade off! I never applied a base coat but the staining was so bad, I’m not sure if an average base coat would protect my nails! It’s like war paint!

My hair care tips/ routine

20130408-124701.jpg

When it comes to hair, I take extra special care of mine because I keep it trapped under a scarf most of the time and it hardly ever feels any fresh air. Because of this, I think it’s best that I do what I can to ensure it stays healthy and my main tip: let it breath! Whether you wear a hijab or not, I think applying product after product to ‘protect’ it is essentially just damaging it more.. Like make up usually has layers and layers and we always ensure we remove our make up, we don’t wash our hair every night before bed (most people), so we shouldn’t bury it under hair products!

I think we should keep our hair maintenance to a minimum and rock the natural look! All types if hair and hairstyles are in at the moment!

Whether you have a tight perm

20130408-124356.jpg

Frizzy hair

20130408-124408.jpg

Boy cut

20130408-130751.jpg

Long hair

20130408-130836.jpg

If you don’t believe me, name a celebrity who has hair similar to yours? If you thought of one.. You have no excuse! The best type of compliment is when someone says you look good and you realise you made minimum effort! Now, we all have ‘bad hair days’ and that’s when a topknot is your best friend! Grab an old sock, cut off the toe, roll it up and make yourself a donut! We’ll be partying like its 1999! Oh yeah!

I keep my hair care fairly simple but here are ALL the hair products I have.. Limited I know but to be honest I think I use 2 regularly and the rest on Eid (twice a year)!

My hair is straight and fairly silky and doesn’t get greasy a lot. I wash it 1-3 times a week, depending on the occasion. It frizzes slightly after washing it and I never use heat on my hair. Despite the fact I get awkward kinks, I just work with them for my benefit.

Herbal essences uplifting volume shampoo
For shampoo, I’m a big believer to buy the cheapest one I can find! If I’m out and spot a shampoo that costs a pound, I’ll buy it because you only end up washing it out anyway! More than anything, really use your fingertips to massage your scalp and get rid of that grease on your scalp. No matter how many times I wash my hair, I’ll always use Head and Shoulders Anti- Dandruff at least once a week to ensure I don’t get flaky (especially when it’s cold- 80% of the time in London). At the moment I’m using this Herbal Essences uplifting volume shampoo.. It smells yummy!

20130408-123704.jpg

TIGI S Factor smoothing conditioner
I like to condition my hair at least 3-4 times a month. The only reason I don’t condition every time I wash is because I think my hair would get greasy quickly! I’ve been using the S Factor range for 5 years now and I’m in love! I’m really loyal to their conditioner and if you have curly or damaged hair, this is your saviour! I use it because its so nourishing, creamy and makes your hair feel like a million dollars! When I use this conditioner, my hair knows just how to style better, look healthy and lustrous! I love it!

20130408-123712.jpg

Tresemme heat defence styling spray
When I’m using heat like a blow dryer, straighteners or curling wand, I like to apply heat spray but not a tonne! I find heat sprays always make your hair feel sticky and stiff after using the heat so I use as little as needed. Because I hardly ever use heat, it doesn’t damage my hair.. WOOPEEE

20130408-123722.jpg

TIGI S Factor smoothing lusterizer
When I want a little pizazz in my hair and want it to look AMAZEBALLS, I always go to my S Factor lusterizer! This stuff makes your hair smooth, tames frizz and adds shine and gloss to your hair! You only need a 3-4 pea sized amounts and fun it through your hair and it’ll change your hair completely! It smells amazing and has glitter in it! I mean.. Glitter.. Really?! I’m in!

20130408-123727.jpg

Milk shake leave in conditioner
When it’s winter and my hair is uber dry, or when I notice I’m getting dandruff, I run to my leave in conditioner. I got this Milk Shake one inside a GlossyBox but I love it and so did everyone I tried it on! It smells like vanilla-toffee-caramel heaven and is a mousse so, is really easy to work with! Apply a palmful of this into 80% dry hair and let it do its magic!

20130408-123732.jpg

Elnett diamond hold hair spray
Who doesn’t need a hairspray? And for me Elnett is the best! I love the Diamond hold because I think it’s the strongest. The hairspray hold really well but doesn’t get crispy or dry and should you need it to, combs straight out! It’s a godsend for those of us that love a bit of back combing and style holding!

What to/ How to/ Haul..

With the winter months here, I know it’s hard for us Hijabi’s to figure out what we want to wear whilst still being modest!

I’ve always been a boots kind of girl and dug out an old pair or two of knee high boots that I got a few summers ago during the sales which I was so glad to find! They were £30 from the ASOS sale so a complete bargain and something like a long jacket and knee high boots is perfect for a hijabi to wear when it’s wet outside and you don’t want to get your skirt or abaya wet but still want to look modest :)

I love the fact that the calf bit of these boots isn’t too big for my skinny legs and that they’re flat so are comfortable to wear all day!

20130211-155353.jpg

20130211-155346.jpg
I love the gold embellishment and soft black leather of these shoes as I’m not a fan of patent shiny leather. I could wear these with any outfit! If you’re wondering, I’m a size 5 :)
Unfortunately ASOS don’t sell these exact shoes anymore but here are a similar pair.

If its not that wet and cold where you live then ankle boots are the way forward! If you cover your feet and don’t wear pumps unless they’re with socks, try some ankle booties like these! They have a wedge but it is only 2 inches high with an inch platform so it’s perfect for giving height without being over the top! I wear ankle boots with my abayas and skirts all the time and they always look fab. I’ve never worn them with jeans etc as I don’t wear jeans and they don’t provide me with enough coverage :)

20130211-160327.jpg
These tan boots are from River Island for £35. They have a lovely colour which like black, suits most outfits and gives a lovely option other than black. I like the laces too as they add a little something extra when most of the show is covered by your skirt. They also come in black!

The next items are for the wedding season that is approaching! I’m so excited for my cousins wedding that is coming up in less than a month and decided to pick out some abayas for options that I could wear. Being on the hunt for a bargain, I looked on eBay and found a seller with the best abayas there are online at the moment! I think there was a sale on at the time or perhaps they were just really cheap but I was so happy when I got them! Also, they gave me a discount because I bought more than one which I was SO happy about!

I love all the detail that has gone into the embroidery of this wonderful brown abaya. The detailing is orange, brown and silver and it is all hand made! I like the intricate touches of the scarf detail and little embellishment on the back too. I’ve also shown you how I’d wear the scarf. Please excuse the bulkiness in the neckline image as I tried to cover my modesty. Find the buyer here! They have new stock regularly! Although this particular abaya is now gone, this next one is still available!

This grey abaya with silver embroidery is my fave!! I love the colour and style of it and it looks beautiful on! They also sell these in other colours and its a bargain at £21.99! They dispatched the item really quick, gave me a really good discount for postage and packaging and had excellent customer service! I’ve got my eye on this glittery one next! They also have an array of sizes.. So get measuring!!

This next abaya is from another seller and is more casual! The price and material is lovely and it’s perfect for those cold spring nights! I like the simple detailing! Although this one is slightly larger on me, I will be cutting the bottom and will be sure to post a picture of me wearing this on my Facebook and Instagram @inherbubble!

The detailing is simple and easy to wear and because it has no beading, nothing will fall off! I love the colour and the way it drops. The scooped neck insures optimum coverage and the waist can be tailored by the in-built belt in the abaya! Find the seller here! They have bargains and this abaya was only £19.99

My next favourite is BLACK! I’m loving black scarves at the moment and this scarf from Tie Rack is AMAZING! I love the thickness and tassels. Although the material does itch a little bit, I think it’s because I have quite sensitive skin! I’ve been loving wearing my scarf like this too! One pin jobby! LAZY DAISY FAIZY!

GLASSES MAKE UP!

20120907-193938.jpg

The worst thing in the world that could have happened, happened!!

All the contact lenses I had tore or got lost and I had no choice but to wear my glasses! This was a disaster for me because I never wear my glasses unless I’m at home and I hardly ever wear them with make up! Now I do love a good pair of glasses and I change them every year but I always thought hijab and glasses wasn’t a good look for me!

Obviously I was forced to wear them and in the morning, I had to think long and hard about the make up I wanted to do!

When wearing glasses, you have to try to define your face slightly more because a lot of it is being covered by a bulky piece! Contour is your best friend and you’ll have to invest some time in doing your eye make up so a little less sleep!

I love my naked palettes at the moment and I have both of them so I used a combination of colours! There are THOUSANDS of dupes for these colours! If you’re the kind of person who finds buying eye shadow disastrous because of the sheer amount of them, and would prefer to use the palette you’ve had for 15 years.. DON’T! BH cosmetics do a palette called the 120 palette which has.. 120 colours! You’ll never need another!

20120907-193953.jpg

20120907-193944.jpg

Glasses can make your eyes seem really small so invest in eye liner and try to define your eyes! I used eye shadow on my top lash line because it feels a little more comfortable and, wears off a little bit better (doesn’t crack or smudge which I find so hard to wipe off). You can also apply eye liner to the bottom lash line because this will even out the balance of your eyes making them look less top heavy! However, don’t go overboard with the the liner because it will make your eyes look tiny and they’re already being magnified by your glasses!

20120907-194130.jpg

Use colours which aren’t too vibrant and stick to neutrals! You can of course do smokey looks with glasses on but save it for the evening time and during the day, stick to browns and neutral colours which compliment all eye colours and skin tones

If you have dark skin, use darker browns and gold for a spice of colour! Even copper gun metal colours will look fabulous with your sexy frames on!

Curl lashes!

20120907-194012.jpg

Eyebrows frame your face so, brush them through and fill them in a little if you need to!

20120907-194033.jpg

Apply a little more mascara than usual to add a little more femininity and to bring something 3D into your eyes which are usually flattened by glasses! If you have weak eye lashes, get some false eye lashes and cut them in half to add them JUST to the outer corner.

20120907-194046.jpg

Define the outer corners and add a little shimmer for dimension!

20120907-194236.jpg

Contour your cheeks! Try contouring from your mouth outwards rather than from your temple in, if you wear a scarf! Use a really small but fluffy brush (Real Techniques contour brush) and blend using your foundation brush!

20120907-194022.jpg

Keep checking how the make up looks with and without glasses on :)
