How to make a healthy Iftaar snack!

20130715-002139.jpg

If you’re a Muslim.. RAMADHAN MUBARAK! Living in London means that our fast is 20 hours long giving us just 4 hours to eat food that keeps us nourished for the day! So my family and I have developed a new meal system which means that we’re eating healthy but still feeling full enough!

Bare in mind.. This recipe is just a snack and not a good replacement for a whole meal!

Serves: 3-5

Ingredients:
• Handful of rocket or mixed leaves (spinach, watercress, lettuce, lambs lettuce, mixed leaves, basil are all good alternatives and I love mixing loads of these together too)
• 6-10 Mixed olives (If you live in London, go the Delicatessen of your local supermarket and you can choose some of your favourite flavoured olives and if not, just buy the jarred type)
• 2-3 inches of Cucumber
• Half a red onion (medium sized)
• 6 Picollo red cherry tomatoes (quartered)
• 2 tablespoons of sunflower seeds (you can of course swap for pumpkin, sesame seeds etc. but I love the subtle taste and soft crunch of these)
• 1/4 red/orange or yellow bell pepper
• 1 inch cube of feta cheese
• 1 tablespoon extra Virginia olive oil
• Optional to add lemon
• Can add grilled chicken, leftover steak etc
• Can also add pepper but the kick for mine comes from jalapeño olives!

Method:
Here’s the beauty.. It’s up to you! You can cut these however you like, but I like to keep mine relatively small just for the ease of eating it. Mix it all together and serve however you like. As a side salad (although I find it very filling) or you can eat it alone!

A lot of Asians have the habit of opening their fast with fried food and all sorts of unhealthy foods. Remember, you may not have eaten for some hours so that doesn’t mean to stuff yourself to he brim of fatty food. Instead, try making this salad (which takes less than 10 mins) and feel good about yourself!!

How to love your body

When it comes to food and my skin and general health, I’ve spent a little bit of time trying to master what my body likes and dislikes! There’s a lot of things I’ve noticed over time which my body reacts to positively and here they are:

When it comes to my skin. A few years ago, I would get painful and mountainous spots on my face for no apparent reason that I would blame to my teenage years! BUT NO.. The reason was milk which, I would drink like water! After not drinking it for a while because I was on holiday, my skin looked like it was brand new! The lack of this then led me to my doctor who confirmed that I had a slight lactose intolerance to dairy so that meant cheese, cream, yoghurt etc. would break my skin out. So I have swapped my cows milk for soya milk and rice milk which isn’t great and to be honest I miss my old milk but I’m happy my skin is cleaner than ever now!

20130417-115305.jpg

In keeping with what I noticed from my holiday, I also noticed how well the sun affected my skin! I noticed how beautiful and glowing I would notice my skin after sitting in the sun for a while. We don’t get a tonne of sun in the UK but, when we do I slap on my sunscreen and sunbathe like a dog out of a window!

20130417-115719.jpg

The way I eat is another big factor! I have always loved eating salad and fruit and for me the best lunch was a big bowl of hearty salad! I noticed that whenever I eat it regularly, my skin becomes so smooth, my scars vanish quicker and I don’t break out at all.

20130417-115349.jpg

Drinking water which is the age old tale! I notice when I drink water in the morning and before I go to bed, I feel refreshed and calm down quicker! My skin feels and looks amazing! And also, my body feels so good! I lose weight quicker too!

20130417-115716.jpg

The main thing I think is that I have trained my body to react or not react to certain foods! There’s a lot of folk tales about what happens when you eat certain food but eating a little of everything and changing your meals on a daily basis is a big deal! You should let your body know that if it doesn’t like milk, you’re still going to drink it every now and again (just like I do and now my body has adjusted to it better).

A lunch so healthy, you’ll turn into Superman!

I’ve been on a health kick recently and one of my favourite things to eat, as you guys know, is salad! I’m trying to eat a bowl (a bowl the size if my head) everyday! Whenever I have salad, I feel like I’m hungry an hour later again and I start binging so I cracked it.. Glug down some milkshake after! It keeps me full for so much longer and tastes yummy!

Cut up whatever vegetables/fruit you like in your salads. You can see this one isn’t too extravagant!

20130411-105522.jpg

I like to pour in 1-2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil which helps to remove the dryness of the salad and half a lemon-ish for extra flavour!

20130411-105543.jpg

For the milkshake you should choose your fruit of choice! Just ensure its extra ripe! You can my bananas are briefing so were really sweet.. Having a riper fruit means you won’t need to add sugar or unhealthy sweeteners

20130411-105827.jpg

Break them up into small pieces and put in your blender

20130411-105840.jpg

The consistency I was aiming for was not a smoothie! I don’t like bits or smoothie-like consistencies so, I want to add as much milk as possible to keep it light. You can see I’m using semi-skimmed milk

20130411-105853.jpg

To 2 bananas I added 3 & 1/2 cups of milk (875ml) which is a lot! But you can share with someone or make 1 banana or keep it in the fridge until tomorrow! Start blending…

20130411-110416.jpg

And you’ll have a thick but not gloopy milkshake which doesn’t need anything else added to it

20130411-110430.jpg

This is a really easy and quick lunch (will take you 20 mins to make the night before and leave it in your fridge until tomorrow)!

How to: make chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies!

20130405-130837.jpg

The other day I made cookies for 20-30 people and needed to think up a recipe which was quick and yummy because I didn’t want to spend hours making them! I made a batch of white chocolate chip, milk chocolate chip and peanut butter! And my brother gave me the idea to mix the peanut butter and milk choc chip together for a unique flavour! This is perfect for people who want to make a quick treat whilst the kids are on a break from school!

Makes 12-14 cookies
Ingredients:
1/2 cup room temperature butter
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg
1 & 1/4 cup plain flour
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
2 tablespoons of peanut butter
100g chocolate chunks

Always start by preparing the oven and lining the baking tray with paper. Gas mark 5 for today’s treats!

20130405-125749.jpg

You then want to get your butter (if its cold out the fridge, put it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds)

20130405-125848.jpg

Add 3/4 cup of sugar

20130405-125954.jpg

And very lightly cream together- you don’t want it to be smooth but just ensure all the mixture is combined. Over mixing will leave the mixture too runny and we’re looking for more of a dough as a harder dough cooks better biscuits.

20130405-130159.jpg

Pop in your egg

20130405-130117.jpg

And vanilla extract. I don’t like using vanilla essence as it’s often artificially flavoured and doesn’t taste as good

20130405-130250.jpg

Add in 2 tablespoons of peanut butter but of course you can add as much as you like depending on what your taste preference is. I’m using a chunky peanut butter with nuts for an extra crunch

20130405-130344.jpg

Bit by bit, add in your flour and mix the mixture in

20130405-130451.jpg

Add in your chocolate chips/ chunks/ pieces.. Whatever you like!

20130405-130525.jpg

Add in your bicarbonate of soda and mix this in well and evenly

20130405-130613.jpg

Your mixture will resemble this

20130405-130659.jpg

And that’s when you can scoop your mixture, a tablespoon at a time, into a heap. I managed to make 12

20130405-130707.jpg

You’ll need to leave them in the oven for around 20 minutes but don’t be afraid to take then out and lightly feel the centre of them.. If its too soft, give them another 5 minutes. And when you’ll take them out, they’ll look like this.

How to make a healthy sandwich!

What you’ll need:
• Home made brown bread (ok, you can use bought too but it’s so worth it to make it at home)
• Turkey Salami (Or any kind you can find at your grocery store)
• Cheddar cheese (but again use any cheese you like)
• Garlic Mayonnaise (or any sauce you like) What’s Ranch? That looks like similar but I have no idea what it is? (I should add that you should use low fat but a little unknown fact about me.. I put garlic mayonnaise in every single sandwich I eat!)

How I lost my stomach using my stomach..

I’ve struggled with losing my stomach for a while. There’s too many times I look in the mirror and everything is fine, apart from my bulging stomach! Because I’m lazy, exercise won’t work for me.. I prefer to just keep active..

.. Or, just change my diet. I’ve been eating really healthy recently because I’m not at work. Taking advantage of the time I have, has been tasting good so far.. If you’ll pardon the pun! So here’s a simple salad which I love making!

20130228-111829.jpg

What you’ll need:
Half a lemon
1-2 inches of cucumber
5-6 basil leaves
3 pieces of salami (any meat of your choice)
1/6 of a bell pepper (I prefer red or yellow)
1-4 of tomato (minus the gooey inside bit.. YUK)
5 olives
Handful of salad leaves
1cm round of an onion

You want to finely chop all of these ingredients minus the lemon which you want to squeeze in at the end. Add a bit at a time and as much as a you like. I like to also add a small drizzle of extra Virgin olive oil (1tbsp).

20130228-111809.jpg

You could eat this:
By itself
On flatbread
In a pitta
On pizza
As a side
In a wrap
In a sandwich

20130228-111850.jpg
Wrap in cellophane and let it marinade in the fridge for extra flavour!

Or try making a basic pesto by making the basil and olive oil a purée using a purée machine and crushing. And use it as a paste or sauce on any of the above methods!

If you want, try adding last night dinners meat in there too! That will help make the salad a little heavier if you’re not a fan of a light lunch.

Since I’ve been having this once a day, I’ve noticed a big change in how hungry or HANGRY I get.. Because it keeps me full for ages without giving me a massive bloated stomach (which I get quite badly after eating). It’s a great weight loss treatment and the olive oil has hydrated and given my skin such a shine.. Even though its a minute amount!

My top foundations and liquid highlighters

20120817-012806.jpg
So, I thought tonight! The blog post would be my top foundations! Inspired by @TanyaBurr who’s a YouTube sensation! I love watching her videos and this month, she’s making a video every other day!

I don’t always wear foundation because my skin has cleared up a lot during recent months! However, I do wear foundation when I feel my skin is looking dull! Which is usually when good old Mr. P comes every month! Yes ladies.. That P!

I use liquid foundation because it is so flawless! When your skin is dull, lacking texture or you need coverage, liquid foundations can really pick your skin up! It’s like a blank canvas to even out your skin!

Mineral or powder foundation is good for when you don’t want as much coverage! If you have oily skin or skin that breaks out, use this because it covers your skin, but doesn’t cake with a heavy layer that stops your face breathing! They don’t give as much coverage but they look really nice and looks like your skin which is perfect for any beautiful lady!

You don’t need to spend tonnes on your foundation and I’m about to show you! I’ll do this in order of highest price to lowest!

Chanel Vita Lumiere aqua:
This foundation!!! O M G! God was happy when this was made! It’s a medium coverage but quite buildable. Has a dewy finish. Goes on easily. Has SPF. Lasts all day. Smells good.. Bad side.. It’s £31! If you want to splurge though, it’s amazing! I really like it! I would say it’s my absolutely favourite foundation ever just because the price makes it feel luxurious.. It’s Chanel!!! If you can, definitely do pick this up! The only downside I can genuinely think of is it’s high price! It also has quite a good colour selection!

20120817-010549.jpg

Nars sheer glow foundation:
THIS STUFF IS AMAZING! It gives your skin the most wonderful glow! Looks truly amazing! I would recommend for normal to dry skin! If you’re oily, avoid at all costs because this will over shine you! I love the way the moisture lasts all day! It doesn’t wear it out! Again a pricey one.. But then Nars is luxury! They have a decent colour range ad it’s definitely one I reach for!

20120817-010811.jpg

MAC MatchMaster foundation:
I like this foundation a lot! It’s very different to the Chanel because the consistency, coverage and application all varies! MatchMaster is excellent for people looking for a heavy coverage! I would actually say this is a foundation for people wearing their make up the whole day for a special event! Weddings and parties will now have a flawless queen in them! The foundation glides on but requires quite a bit of blending! The colour range is quite good and as the colour suggests, it does blend in with your natural skin colour! It’s £25 so not as heavy a blow a the Chanel! I would say though, aim to go to a MAC counter or store to get matched up with MAC foundations because you’re never a colour you think you are!

20120817-010832.jpg

Bourjois healthy mix/ Bio Detox:
Ok I know I’m cheating but technically not! I always use these two together! The healthy mix is great because it has a really dewy finish.. Only thing is.. It has little coverage in my opinion (almost like a tinted moisturiser) and can sometimes makes my skin look dull.. Even though it gives a glow! Hence why, I use Bio Detox! This has quite a brightening effect in my opinion! Where the healthy mix is easily bendable and glides on, the bio detox you have to blend in, but they both work well together to make a satin-like finish that makes your skin look really bright!

20120817-010846.jpg

Rimmel wake me up foundation:
For the price and the brand.. This is the one I reach for on a day to day basis! As well it being Pixi2woo, Tanya Burr’s, favourite too, it’s amazing! It actually lifts your skin up and really brightens it up! It’s £8.99 and I like the packaging too! This contains a little bit of shimmer which doesn’t actually do anything but I think they would sell better without the shimmer cause 80% of people avoid the glitter!

20120817-010825.jpg

Barbara Daly moisture foundation:
£7.. £7.. £7! This stuff.. Should be a world record holder! For the value, it’s astonishing! Pick this up from Tesco when you next go and I can guarantee you’ll reach for this every morning! She has lots of other foundations for different skin types! Her colour range is fairly good and I love the spatula applicator cause I’m not shaking the bottle trying to get something out every morning (extra movement in the a.m. Is not appreciated!). The coverage is quite light but you can build it up! It’s so versatile! It doesn’t give a dewy glow at all, and looks like your skin, but better!

20120817-010839.jpg

Body Shop Virgin Minerals Foundation:
This is the first ever mineral foundation I got! I have the Laura Mercier mineral powder but Mr. A got it in a compact form which although good, is harder to work with (TBH, he has no clue with make up and I gave him a list where I didn’t specify if I wanted loose or pressed). The body shop foundation is lovely! It’s very fine and looks really nice on the skin. It makes your skin look flawless and gives a brightening and matte finish. It’s quite build able too which I learnt recently.. So rather versatile! Use a real techniques buffing brush with this baby and you’re done!! Must say though, it doesn’t last very long on my skin! Which I think is the same with most mineral foundations! I find it wears off after 5/6 hours so perhaps keeping it in your handbag, would help when you need a cheeky too up!

20120817-010918.jpg

L’oreal Lumi Magique primer:
This stuff has changed my foundation routine! Whenever I wear a light coverage foundation or mineral/ powder foundation, I run towards this for an extra glow! It doesn’t appear over-bearing and I always apply under my foundation because I’m not a fan of in-your-face highlight! I love this primer because it works all through the day. I actually feel like it has a 12 hour staying power because on my skin, it never wears off! (rose gold packaging too! Bonus points!)

Revlon bare it all highlight:
This is my more pinky highlight colour! When I’m feeling like the MAC lustre drops are overpowering, or the Lumi Magique is too cold, I run for this! My mum got this for me quite a while back and I use such a tiny amount, I’ve barely made a dent in it! It’s fantastic as a cheek highlight and for an all over glow under foundation! It’s quite hard to find though, although eBay has a lot of sellers!

20120817-012754.jpg

So there you go guys! Be sure to check out Tanya Burr on Pixi2woo. She does amazing make up tutorials too! Woo Tanya!
