Disappointing products of 2013

20140121-223327.jpg

Although 2013 was a good year for my beauty regime, there were a few beauty products which did let me down a bit! This isn’t to say that they wouldn’t work on other people, but I thought it would be good to show what products don’t suit me!

Batiste Dry Shampoo – Fresh & Flirty Blush – £4.99

20140121-224250.jpg
* When I got this dry shampoo, I was hoping that it would help with ‘hijab hair’ that us Hijabi’s get after wearing a scarf all day! It’s superb at adding a bit of volume and reviving limp hair but it left an AWFUL white cast on my hair! I looked like an old lady! I know they do a spray specifically for brunette’s, so I may just have to try that!

Topshop Cream Blush – Afternoon Tea – £6

20140121-224352.jpg
* With this product, I was so excited to try if after I had bought it because I loved the colour, however, I should have known better! Cream blushes and me have a notorious relationship because they don’t last on me unless I set them with a powder! This was the only cream blush I got this year but I feel as though although its cream-to-powder formulation, it does nothing and wears off momentarily! Was a waste of money to be honest!

Bobbi Brown Corrector – Bisque – £18.50

20140121-224422.jpg
* This was actually more of an impulse purchase which didn’t work out! I was with someone who said they swear by it and because I had heard so much about it, I was crazy to try it however, it took me ages to figure out what colour I was, how to apply it and now.. To finish it! It’s really cakey and thick and also I feel as though the shade is off! It creases really badly and when I try to set it, it makes my under eyes look dry.. Very strange product for me!

Eyeko Skinny Mini Liquid Eyeliner – Black – £12

20140121-224507.jpg
* This was one of the first ever products I have tried from Eyeko! I was so excited to try it because I loved using my L’Oreal Perfect Slim eyeliner and really got into the felt tip eyeliner method! However, this was really dry the second time I used it even though I stored it nib face down! It’s really black and has a good applicator but the product was just dry and really hard to revive! It was so dry, it was tugging at my eyes! I’m don’t know if I got a bad one or whether they’re all bad however, I’m still open to trying Eyeko products.. No hard feelings!

Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Extreme Plump Pucker – Pink Out Loud – £10

20140121-224526.jpg
* When it comes to lipgloss, last year was a big shiny mess for me! I tried so many glosses ranging from £1 to £20 and by far and beyond, I was disappointed the most by this one! It is Soooooooo strong, it made my lips feel like I had had anaesthetic injections in them! It was really painful and I didn’t feel as though my lips had changed in the slightest in size! When I apply it on top of lipstick, I can’t tell I even have gloss on! It’s a nice colour and has a good finish and pigment, but it’s hard to wear!

Essie Nail Varnish – Russian Roulette – £7.99

20140121-224550.jpg
* This nail varnish colour is AMAZING! I love this red because it’s a true red and not orange nor blue toned! It looks good on any skin tone and is so beautiful to apply! It has a big brush and the colour is super pigmented BUT it stains my nails SOOOOO bad! It took me months to grow out the colour because it just wouldn’t fade off! I never applied a base coat but the staining was so bad, I’m not sure if an average base coat would protect my nails! It’s like war paint!

L’oreal Skin Perfection 3 in 1 Purifying Skin Micellar Solution

L’oreal Skin Perfection 3 in 1 Micellar Cleansing Solution

20131027-165026.jpg
When my BioDerma recently finished (I went through 2 500ml bottles in less than a year), I was so sad! I had never used a cleansing water before and had so badly fallen in love with it! It effortlessly took makeup off and I didn’t think I’d be able to find anything like it!

When the last drop touched my face, I decided to man up and go to boots to have a snoop around all the different cleansers the drugstore had to offer! I knew that some big brands have amazing ones too but I didn’t want to have to pay tonnes of money for something I use everyday! I had a look at No7, Soap & Glory and then finally L’oreal!

When I took my makeup off the first night, I was AMAZED! I had put on a full face of makeup including waterproof eyeliner and this just wiped it off! I was surprised at L’oreal to make such a big brand dupe! I’m not too keen on the packaging because of the way the liquid comes out.. It spews out and often spills. But I love how slimline it is, making it perfect for travel.

20131027-165041.jpg

You can see how it removes makeup. In the swatch shows a cheek stain and waterproof eyeliner and it came off with little or no effort at all. I always use the solution on a baby wipe (Huggies Value Pack- £0.97p) and I wipe my makeup off.

20131029-214422.jpg

It’s fantastic value for money too coming in at a whopping £4.99 for 200ml! And it’s equivalent to Bioderma which costs £9.99 for 250ml! You an get this from any drugstore! Super handy and lovely!

Maybelline Baby Lips.. Finally!

20130816-200956.jpg

I had read on a few blogs that Maybelline had finally released their infamous ‘baby lips’ in the UK and I had been keeping my eyes peeled for them but hadn’t seen them until now!

I really wanted to try them because I always seem to have dry lips and I love a bit of tint.. Not to mention anything that smells good, on my lips! These seemed like the perfect token!

20130816-201005.jpg

The packaging seems a bit flimsy and not really the kind that I’d happily whip out when meeting the Queen as its loud and bright (not to mention a bit flimsy) however, I don’t mind! I can tell I’m not paying for packaging because the product is cheap so I understand their thinking!

When choosing the colours I had a choice between Cherry Me and Peaches because they were the only colours that appealed to me however, I wanted to try just the one for now so being an avid fan of the Haribo Cherries, I chose Cherry Me!

Ok.. The smell! I CAN’T EVEN EXPLAIN! I want to eat it! It has that typical candy cherry scent! If you’ve ever had Cherry Drops, Cherry penny sweets or anything sweet cherry flavoured, you’ll understand! I love the fact that once I’ve got it on my lips and whilst I’m applying, people ask what smells so good!

20130816-201016.jpg

The colour isn’t super pigmented but I like the sheer colour it does have! It’s almost transparent apart from a very light red hue that you notice once you look hard!

The moisturising factor is mediocre! Nothing uber drenching or anything but I like the finish which isn’t super glossy or super matte! You could literally wear this with any makeup look and it would suit adequately!

20130816-201010.jpg

All in all, I’m a big fan! I really like these and I know I’ll get through this ‘Cherry Me’ one in no time! So I’ll be sure to try some more soon!

Baby lips are £2.99 from Boots or Superdrug

1 product.. 5 uses! Talcum powder!

I’m a big fan of multi- use products and recently, I think I found the best of the best.. Talcum powder! Originally used when changing baby diapers to avoid wet rashes, these days, so many products are based off powders! You can get this from the £1 store and it lasts ages!

20130421-114103.jpg

1.) Getting greasy hair? Sprinkle some talcum powder into the roots of your hair and massage in to have your scalp feeling fresh!

2.) Want more voluminous hair? Sprinkle talcum powder into the roots of your hair and massage in to give your hair some lift!

3.) Put too much body lotion on? Pour some talcum into your hand and lightly tub in your body to remove any excess moisture you have!

4.) Anti- bacterial? When your feet are wet out of the shower, you’re more likely to get feet- related conditions such as athletes foot. Sprinkle some talcum powder onto your feet to absorb any excess moisture!

5.) Smell like a baby? who doesn’t love the smell of a baby? Use this as perfume by rubbing into your skin.. Especially arm pits (will absorb moisture) leaving behind a gorgeous smell!

How to bake something in the oven without the nappies.. CUPCAKES!!

You want to always measure your ingredients beforehand when making yummy food for baking! I like to pre-measure and weigh because you can’t help be like.. YEAH! When you pour in that ready-to-use-flour!

20130321-151500.jpg
You will need:
• 110g (1/2 cup) butter (room temp so pop in the microwave for 10-15 seconds)
• 110g (1/2 cup) Sugar (they always say caster but I just use granulated)
• 110g (1/2 cup) Self raising flour
• 1-2 tablespoons of milk
• 2 large eggs
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• Marshmallow fluff
• Flavourings (I used powdered coconut, strawberry flavouring, lemon flavouring and marshmallow fluff).
• Decorations

You want to put the cake cases in the cupcake tray

20130321-151623.jpg

And pop the oven on to 180C/350F/Gas 4

20130321-151636.jpg

Grab the butter and put it in a bowl

20130321-151651.jpg

Grab your sugar and add that to the mixture and stir in together..

20130321-151658.jpg

.. Until it look like this..

20130321-151713.jpg

..You want to then get your vanilla extract and add this in

20130321-151746.jpg

In a separate bowl, whisk not one but two eggs..

20130321-151811.jpg

Add this into your mixture..

20130321-151831.jpg

.. Until it looks like this..

20130321-151916.jpg

Grab your flour and sieve this in as well as the milk..

20130321-152005.jpg

And the mixture will look like this..

20130321-152023.jpg

You then want to grab an empty clean bowl and the mixture..

20130321-152115.jpg

And grab your flavouring (I’m using coconut powder first) which, I’ll stir in (I used 2 teaspoons)

20130321-152129.jpg

Stir this in well and make sure it’s not lumpy and then pour into your cupcake cases

20130321-152141.jpg

Grab the rest of your flavourings and do the same

20130321-152154.jpg

For the marshmallow fluff I added about a heaped tablespoon and although its squire clumpy, remove most of the clumps using the back of the spoon

20130321-152207.jpg

Pop the whole tray in the middle shelf of the oven..

20130321-152217.jpg

The recipe I was following said 12-15 minutes but mine took around 20mins to bake

20130321-152228.jpg

Remove them when they look like this. The marshmallow fluff ones will feel very soft but they’ll set

20130321-152257.jpg

For an extra bit of something, I dug out the centre of a few with a sharp knife, filled it with marshmallow fluff and decorated

20130321-155029.jpg

THEY TASTED DELISH

My make up removal!

20120803-003129.jpg
Ah! The awaited make up extrapolation routine of mine! This is the most basic routine I think I could have ever found! Now I wear make up almost 6 times a week, so I need to ensure that I remove it well so no residue is left.. But a way that isn’t nasty on my bank balance :)

Here we go:

20120803-002929.jpg
1.) I use Avene extremely gentle cleanser.. As a cleanser! Although this says extremely gentle.. I find it does sting your eyes if it goes into your eyes so be careful of that! I put a pound size amount into the back of my freshly clean hands and divide my face into 7 sections and work on these sections separately.

20120803-002801.jpg
I then massage this almost like I’m trying to absorb it into my skin and ensure that I get to the edges of my face and that I don’t tug my skin too much.
When it comes to eyes I get a little of the cleanser on my fingertips and I rub my lashes using the ball of my index finger to gently massage the mascara and eye liner off using small circular motions. It will come right off.. Trust me.. It’s amazing!

20120803-003051.jpg
2.) I then take my baby wipe which I like the scented version of, because it smells yummy likes babies! I stretch it slightly because this makes the wipe bigger and I can use more of it to cover my face! I then gently rub the wipe all over my face.. Changing the section of the wipe to a clean bit for every section of my face! I do the eyes last! And just like I used my finger to rub my mascara off.. I wrap the wipe around my index finger and again gently in circular motions wipe off the residue!

You’ll notice all your make wipes straight off! This is the BEST method of removing make up I find! I have never used toner on my skin and not do I use face wash after this procedure. The reason being.. Because I don’t need to! I don’t want to touch and massage my skin too much if I don’t think toner does anything to it! It’s unnecessary expense to me and I think my make up comes off and my skin feels much fresher just by doing this routine! I apply moisturiser after though :)

Avene extremely gently cleanser can be found in Boots for £8/9
And baby wipes are always on offer for £1 but usually cost £1.50 for a pack of 64!
The avene lasts me almost 4 months! And the baby wipes last me more than 2 months! So that’s basically £30 for the whole year! And you’ll still have some wipes left over!

My tip is.. If you see the wipes on offer for £1.. Pick up a few packs because they don’t go out of date and if you keep them sealed until you need to use them, you’ll get a lot more for your pennies!

London town

So living in London means that there are a lot of available sites nearby to keep you occupied. Ever since i started working, i discovered my city even more. I fell in love with it.

Not only have I ventured into towns I didn’t know existed, but I also am trying more things and am more confident than ever before. Even to go out to a new place every month, is proving to be a hit with me! I LOVE IT! Meeting new people from all walks of life and not only passing them by, but interacting with them too. The problem with working in retail is, that you are limited to only meeting the people that live in that area, but if you visit different areas all the time, who you meet, is completely beyond your control. I feel like this type of way of life is better than being surrounded by what you know all the time. Getting married, having children and even starting new job will involve meeting people unbeknown to you, so its a good idea to get out there. Restricting yourself to one type of population makes us naive, stereotype and and judge people before we even take a proper look at them.

As well as meeting new people, I have ventured to my trips in the city. This has meant going to musicals, restaurants and exhibits and tours that although seems a bit tourist-y, is actually really fun with the right people. I only ever go with my cousins as you all may know that i don’t socialise with people who i don’t know. being with these peoples makes me comfortable in an environment which I may otherwise not have been easy in. Remember.. There’s comfort in numbers :)

A list of places that I definitely recommend and a link to their websites are listed below. I only tend to do this once a month with my cousins, but its enough to refresh my mind..

  1. Musical- Wicked £25 an adult ticket
  2. Musical- Shrek £25 an adult ticket
  3. Restaurant- Steakout £20 a head
  4. Restaurant- Tinseltown £30 a head
  5. Theme Park- Thorpe park £20/ half price sale
  6. Tour- Harry Potter Warner Bro’s £28 adult
  7. Museum- British Museum/ Hajj exhibit £12
